IMMIGRATION
Questions on Immigration? Click here
Dear Editor,

Please HELP!!
I am one of those people who immigrated to the United States as a young child. I never applied for U. S. citizenship. I just didn’t think it mattered. I am
planning to go on a cruise and suddenly realized my Jamaican passport is long expired. I have no idea where to start or what to do.  Can you please point me
in the right direction?
Sincerely
Cee – Cee

Dear Cee-Cee,
Thank you for your inquiry. Caribbean Focus Magazine contacted Dr. Alston Meade who is the Honorary Counsel in Philadelphia and he submitted the
following information on passport renewal. We hope this information will be of assistance to you.
RENEWAL OF JAMAICAN PASSPORTS

Some of the Things You Should Know

A.  All applications for Jamaican Passports are sent to Jamaica for processing.  This is no longer
done in the U.S.A.  After the application is submitted, it takes several weeks before the new passport is delivered.  To prevent delay, it is important to send in the
application appropriately certified and accompanied by the required supporting documents.

The following is a list of requirements that apply to most applicants.  Please note that this list does not apply in every case.  For example, there are special
provisions regarding minors. It is the responsibility of the applicant to consult with a knowledgeable individual, and to ensure that the application is properly
completed and the appropriate documents attached.

B.  Documents most often required  (These must be originals – Photocopies will be rejected)

1.          Certified copy of birth certificate
2.          Supplementary identification document.  e.g. Driver’s                 Licence.
(This is to establish the applicant’s identity when the form is being completed and certified. It is not sent off to the Government of Jamaica with the completed
application).
3.          Any name change must be substantiated by docu        -                mentary evidence.    For example, a married
or divorced woman, who has acquired her                         spouse’s surname, is required to submit a cer                -tified copy of her Marriage Certificate.
4.        Applications for renewal of a passport MUST be accompanied by the expired passport.  If the renewal is necessary because there are no available pages,
the current passport must be submitted.
5.        If the applicant’s previous passport has been lost, stolen or destroyed and is not available for presentation, a police report stating the circumstances
MUST be submitted with the application form.  The application will not be processed if the applicant fails to submit a police report.

C.  Photographs
Applicants are required to submit two (2) identical copies of a professionally produced photograph taken not more than six (6) months prior to the application.
Specifications include:
·        The photographs should be taken in colour with a flash finish, against a plain background.
·        There should be no reflection from eyeglasses or background shadows.
·        Photographs should provide a full frontal view of the head, neck and top of the shoulder with ears clearly visible.
·        The applicant should wear no head covering while taking the photograph except where required for religious purposes.
